All of our Amber jewellery is created using only genuine Baltic Amber and Russian Amber with natural fossilized 'inclusions' (fossilized plants and insects). All of our Baltic Amber is between 30 to 90 million years old.

Amber is a beautiful and rare fossil, created millions of years ago when large stands of forests in some parts of the world began to seep resin when damaged by weather or insects. This aromatic resin flowed down the sides of the trees, as well as filling internal fissures, trapping debris, such as seeds, leaves, feathers and insects. These fossilized leaves and insects are called 'inclusions' and add to the value of Baltic Amber jewellery. Many pieces of Amber contain artificially implanted 'inclusions' to add to their value; many pieces of Amber containing large insects have been man made.

As geologic time progressed the forests were buried and the resin hardened into a soft, warm, golden gem, known as amber. Amber is the fossilized resin of ancient trees which forms through a natural polymerization of the original organic compounds. Most of the world's amber is in the range of 30-90 million years old.

Of all the amber deposits in the world, probably the most famous and certainly the largest is that of the Baltic region. It represents some 80% of the worlds known amber resource. Going back into prehistory this amber has been used and fashioned by humankind in countless ways and in measureless quantities. Amber from this source can be found on the East Coast of England all the way to the far shores of Estonia. The Baltic amber deposits are the largest source of amber yet discovered.

Amber is a gem which is often artifically made or enhanced with artifical inclusions. Man made Amber is easily recognised however through some simple tests that can be performed by anyone. The simplest way to tell if your Amber is genuine is to drop a small amount of Acetone (nail varnish remover) onto the surface of the Amber. Genuine Amber will be unharmed by this test however artificial Amber will become tacky and the Acetone may take on the colour of the Amber. Another simple way to test the authenticity of Amber is to burn the Amber. Genuine Amber will not melt and will burn in a way resembling incense, giving off a pleasant aroma; artificial Amber will melt and release a chemical odour. You can also drop your Amber into a bowl of salt water to test its authenticity as genuine Amber will float while artificial Amber will sink.

The finest Amber jewellery will be handmade using genuine Amber which has been tumbled and contains natural fossilised inclusions. The value of Amber is determined by the quality of the inclusions and pieces of Amber with genuine and natural rare inclusions such as fossilised insects are the most valuable.
