Chalcedony is a variety of Quartz and although it isn’t a separate gemstone variety, it is commonly referred to as such.

Chalcedony can be found in a variety of colours, however the name Chalcedony typically only refers to the white, blue or green shades, while all other shades are considered to be Quartz or Agate.

There are several varieties of Chalcedony which are commonly thought of as separate gemstone varieties including Chrysoprase (an apple green shade), Tigers Eye (a golden brown colour), Carnelian (a red to orange shade), Onyx (a black Chalcedony) and Sardonyx (a striped Chalcedony).
