Both Citrine and yellow Topaz are the traditional birthstones for November and those born under the zodiac sign of Scorpio. Citrine and Topaz are very often confused as they both have a very similar golden yellow tone however they are very different gemstones.
Citrine is a clear yellow or golden variety of Quartz and is related to both Amethyst and rock crystal. It is possible for both Citrine and Amethyst gems to occur in the same gemstone, causing the gem to be bi-coloured showing both yellow and purple, often with a clearly defined colour split. The name 'Citrine' is derived from the gemstones colour (golden yellow) however the most valuable Citrine gems have a rich, deep orange tone and are known as ‘Madeira’ Citrine.
