Citrine is a variety of Quartz displaying natural golden tones.

Citrine and Topaz are the birthstones for the month of November and the zodiac sign Scorpio. Citrine and Topaz are often confused however they are very different gemstones.

Citrine is the clear yellow or golden coloured form of the mineral Quartz and is related to Amethyst and rock crystal. It is possible for both Citrine and Amethyst to occur in the same stone causing the gemstone to be bi-coloured. These bi-colour gemstones are known as Ametrines and are found naturally in only one mine worldwide.

The name 'Citrine' is derived from this gems colour (lemon yellow) however the most valuable Citrine gems have a rich, deep colour.

There are several varieties of Citrine including Madeira Citrine, a rich orange coloured Citrine, Lemon Citrine, a pale yellow coloured gem and Champagne Citrine, a variety of Citrine with brown base tones.

Naturally yellow Citrine is actually quite rare with most 'Citrine' gems sold today being heat treated Amethyst.

Citrine has a hardness of 7 on Moh's hardness scale.

In ancient times Citrine was thought to provide protection against snake venom. Citrine is believed to have certain mystical properties and is associated with stimulating the bodies own healing energies and cleansing the aura. Citrine is also associated with raising self esteem, improving memory, aiding problem solving and opening the 3rd chakra.

Whether you share these mystical beliefs or not Citrine jewellery will always be a popular choice.
