Opals are the birthstone for people born in October under the zodiac sign of Libra. Opal variations are practically unlimited. Only precious opal exhibits flashes of rainbow like colours; 'common opal' does not possess this quality. We only use precious Opal in our Opal jewellery.

Opal colour preference varies greatly from country to country. Any solid Opal with good colour will always hold it’s value so choose the colour that appeals to you most. There is no right and wrong when it comes to choosing an Opal colour, only personal preference.

When buying Opal Jewellery take great care to ensure that you are buying a solid Opal rather than a ‘Doublet’ or a ‘Triplet’. A doublet is a thin slice of Opal glued onto a much cheaper stone backing. This stone backing is usually created from a black stone such as Onyx to bring out the colour in the Opal and to give the appearance of a much more valuable Opal. A triplet is an even thinner slice of Opal set between a dark base and a crystal top layer to give the appearance of a much more valuable stone. When an Opal is cut for use in triplets it may produce enough slices to create hundreds of Opal triplets with each slice of Opal being only a fraction of a mm thick.

You should also check the back of the Opal jewellery; if it is enclosed you are most likely buying a triplet or a doublet. All of the Opals in our Opal jewellery are sourced from opal fields in Australia, including White Cliffs, Lightning Ridge, Andamooka, Lambina and Coober Pedy. The most famous of these opal fields is probably Lightning Ridge, the place where mainly the coveted Black Opal is found. Andamooka, where Crystal Opal and Light Opal are mined, is the place where what is probably the worlds largest Opal was found, with a weight of 6,843 kilograms, the 'Andamooka Desert Flame'. Lambina (pronounced 'Lamina') has been known for producing very high quality opal for over 30 years. Coober Pedy, is a word from Aborigine language meaning 'white man in a hole'.

Opal Jewellery Care: Do not use harsh cleansers on your opal jewellery and do not clean opals with ultrasonic cleaners. Never rub oil on an opal, because although it makes the fire brighter it can damage the opal. It is recommended that you periodically soak opals in water to help them reabsorb lost moisture.
